Everyone talks about dieting around the holidays. Right before Thanksgiving and Christmas you see diet articles in every magazine. How to resist eating all that turkey. How to control yourself while you’re baking cookies. But, I say, winter weight is no problem for me. I gain my extra pounds in the summer. The barbecues, the Mike’s Hard Lemonade, the iced tea, the macaroni salad and the ice cream. I am out by the pool every day with the children and it is non-stop snacking. And I am entertaining a lot and the hummus and chips are out. I am eating foods I wouldn’t normally eat in the winter such as ribs, burgers, and hot dogs. I would NEVER eat a hot dog normally. But in the summer, on the grill, what is better than a weanie? I buy the organic, no nitrates weanies so it’s not that bad, but again, it’s not that great either. But I have found a way to control it. If I want my fun I have to be careful. If I have a Mike’s Hard, I don’t eat the bun with my burger. If I am going to a barbecue, I eat a light lunch, only a yogurt or banana. If I eat like I did this weekend, today I basically starve myself with oatmeal and salad. I know I will gain a few pounds, and when my shorts get too tight, I start to be careful, but it’s all worth it for the fun, and yum, in the sun.
